Supported by Leeds 400, Leeds City Council and the Churches Conservation Trust, the grounds of St John the Evangelist on New Briggate will once again ring with the boom of muskets and the clash of swords. Members of the Earl of Manchester’s Regiment of Foote, part of the Sealed Knot reenactment society, will bring the sights and sounds of the 17th Century to life with costumed reenactors with demonstrations of traditional crafts, talks about the history of the Civil Wars, and displays of musket, pike and sword.

Battle of Nantwich
Holly Holy Day takes us back to the seventeenth century and the four-year long first English civil war between Parliamentarians (AKA Roundheads) and the Royalists (AKA Cavaliers) loyal to Charles I. The war broke out in 1642 and soon afterwards, in January 1643, Parliamentarians took the town of Namptwiche (Cheshire’s second town and important because of its strategic position on the road to Chester where Royalist reinforcements from Ireland could be landed).

17th Regiment of Foot 1775-1783
The 17th Regiment of Foot 1775-83 is a UK Living History society, part of Redcoats and Revolutionaries, which portrays the people of the American War of Independence for public education and entertainment at events around the country. Our specialty is the life of the Soldier, on home service, or fighting in the many campaigns of the American Revolutionary War. Our volunteer members band together to research the clothing, accoutrements and trappings of the late 18th century British soldier, and how they lived, worked and fought. Alongside the soldiers, members also recreate the lives of the many civilians who followed the army across whole continents, as wives and children, or tradesmen supporting the military machine. We have members from all over the UK with a core contingent in the East Midlands, providing guidance to outfit each soldier, and training them in the use of real black-powder muskets! It's a rewarding hobby that allows you to get away from the banality of modern life, camp in amazing historic venues, while entertaining and educating audiences. If you like the sound of that, consider joining us!

49th Division Living History Association
Founded in 2024 as an ‘umbrella’ association for a number of long established living history groups - the ‘Bloody Red Tabs’, the ‘Dukes at War’, the ‘Sheffield Polar Bears’, ‘Padre’s Hour’, and the ‘Railway Operating Group (R.E.). Whilst all of the LHGs retain their individuality, they come together to form a collective capable of putting on huge, immersive displays as well as more intimate recreations of the past. Focused on ‘the Butcher Bears’, we portray infantry impressions as well as staff, engineering, medical, and chaplain personnel of the men of the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division between 1943-1945. We attend events large and small, including a number of the premier public events every season, as well as immersive private training events. Although all three groups formed in Yorkshire, we have members from all over the country - from the Scottish Borders to Essex via Cumbria, Northumberland, Co. Durham, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Derbyshire, Anglesey, South Wales, and Oxfordshire - so don’t focus too much on where you are, as most groups and associations tend to come together at events rather than live round the corner from you! We are always keen to hear from potential new members, especially males aged 18-45. Drop us a message via email or Messenger as you prefer to find out more.

Living History · Combat Reenactor · Craft Demonstrator · VikingWhy did we create Living History Events
We've been taking our son to museums and living history events for years; his passion for history in all perios and a discovery about our grandparents' role in the Second World War, turned into a shared family interest in 1940s and WW2 events especially. The more events we attended, the more obvious one problem became: there was no single place where we could see all the details for all the events. We had to browse lot's of Facebook groups and pages, different organisers' and venue websites and our own scribbled list to try and keep track.
So we built the site we wished already existed. Every upcoming and past UK living history and reenactment event in one place, viewed on a list or a map, searchable by period and region along with all the details that actually help you decide whether to go: is there a battle, will there be vehicles or a flypast, is there food, how much is it, can you camp overnight, and how have other people rated and reviewed it. Reenactment groups get their own profile too, so you can see which reenactors, entertainers, singers and groups are attending.
It's free to browse and free to list... whether you're an event attendee, an organiser, a reenactment group, a vintage entertainer or singer, or you're looking for your next day out among 2,000 years of British history.
